Gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy)
Around 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a tube-shaped stomach roughly the size of a banana. This restricts food intake and also reduces levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin. It is currently the most commonly performed bariatric procedure globally. Most patients lose 60 to 70% of their excess weight within 12 to 18 months.
Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y)
A small pouch is created from the top of the stomach and connected directly to the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and a section of the bowel. This both restricts intake and reduces calorie absorption. Gastric bypass is particularly effective for patients with type 2 diabetes and often produces better long-term results than a sleeve in certain patient groups.
Adjustable gastric band
A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch. The band can be tightened or loosened post-operatively via a port under the skin. It is reversible and the least invasive of the bariatric procedures, but typically produces less dramatic weight loss than a sleeve or bypass.
Gastric balloon
A soft silicone balloon is placed in the stomach endoscopically, passed orally without any incisions. The balloon is then filled with saline, taking up space in the stomach and reducing the amount of food you can comfortably eat. Available for 6 or 12 months, after which it is safely removed using the same non-surgical approach. Not suitable for everyone but an effective option for patients who want a non-surgical first step.

Most bariatric surgery patients spend five to seven days in Turkey in total. You undergo pre-operative blood tests and assessment on arrival. Surgery typically takes place on day two or three and requires one to two nights in the hospital. You then move to your hotel for recovery before flying home. A structured post-operative diet and supplement programme is provided before you leave, and your Medstar coordinator stays in contact throughout your recovery period. Long-term dietary and lifestyle support is available through the clinic by video consultation.
